Final Fantasy VII Revelation could demand over 200 GB, forcing players to clear storage space

Square Enix's upcoming remake installment may become the largest base game install ever, requiring both a physical disc and a substantial additional download.

Final Fantasy VII Revelation might use upwards of 200 GB and requires an additional download — latest entry in the series of remakes may set a new record for the size of a base install

As storage costs remain elevated for both solid-state and mechanical drives, gamers are increasingly vigilant about managing their available capacity—especially as major studio releases continue to expand in size. Players interested in Final Fantasy VII Revelation, the concluding chapter of Square Enix's remake trilogy, may need to uninstall existing titles to accommodate what could exceed 200 GB.

Details emerged during the Tokyo Game Show, where Video Games Chronicle conducted an interview with Naoki Hamaguchi, the director overseeing the Final Fantasy VII remake series. According to Hamaguchi, the game could occupy 200 GB or more, distributed across one UHD Blu-ray disc containing 93.1 GB of usable data plus a mandatory additional download potentially totaling 100 GB or higher.

Hamaguchi characterized the 200 GB figure as a preliminary estimate, though the projection aligns with the series' extensive scope and the previous installment's footprint. Rebirth, the prior entry, consumed approximately 146 GB of storage. When asked whether the game could fit on two UHD Blu-ray discs instead, Hamaguchi indicated that such an approach would necessitate "compromise" regarding either the game's scope or visual quality.

The director also explained that distributing content through digital channels permits ongoing patches up until launch, whereas the physical disc manufacturing pipeline requires approximately three months of advance preparation.

Hamaguchi confirmed that two character-focused DLC expansions are planned for Revelation. One will explore Vincent's background, while the second will focus on Sephiroth, the series' iconic antagonist. Given that the INTERmission DLC for the original Remake occupied roughly 8 GB, a complete installation of Revelation including all DLC could potentially reach 215 to 220 GB.

Such a storage footprint would position Final Fantasy VII Revelation as apparently the first game requiring 200 GB for a base installation alone. By comparison, Call of Duty Black Ops 6 exceeded 300 GB only when players installed every available content pack and language option. Certain PC titles including DCS, Microsoft Flight Simulator, and ARK: Survival Evolved can consume hundreds of gigabytes, but only through the addition of supplementary maps and content expansions.

The game launches April 8, 2027, offering players considerable time to prepare their systems. PlayStation 5 and PC users benefit from straightforward expansion options, as both platforms support standard NVMe drives—with Sony's console accommodating up to 8 TB. Xbox players face less favorable circumstances, since expanding storage requires proprietary and more expensive expansion modules capped at 4 TB.
