Intel Patents MicroLED Integration in Chip Packaging Using Glass Substrates
A newly granted U.S. patent reveals Intel's approach to embedding MicroLEDs directly into chip packaging via glass substrates and Through-Glass-Vias, marking the latest chapter in over a decade of glass substrate research.

Intel's latest patent filing describes a method for integrating MicroLEDs into semiconductor packaging, according to TrendForce. The approach places semiconductor dies equipped with MicroLEDs onto a glass substrate, then uses Through-Glass-Vias (TGV) to route power and signal pathways, enabling the devices to generate red, green, and blue (RGB) light output. According to Intel's patent filing, potential applications include diagnostic testing capabilities and the ability to produce custom lighting patterns on chip surfaces, which could support personalized device designs and enhance visual aesthetics.
The optical interconnect possibilities presented by this technology represent a commercially significant opportunity for Intel. Separately, Taiwanese optoelectronics manufacturer AU Optronics maintains a technology development roadmap that aligns with Intel's patented approach, and industry sources point to possible joint efforts between the two firms, suggesting they may be working together on complementary technologies in this domain.
The patent represents a continuation of Intel's sustained investment in glass substrate technologies spanning more than ten years.
