Happy Opt Out October! Let’s Find Real Alternatives to the Tech Giants

The largest technology companies have woven themselves into daily routines through their dominant software, artificial intelligence systems, social networks and operating systems—often by default rather than deliberate choice. Reconsidering that dependence has become urgent.

The Electronic Frontier Foundation created Opt Out October last year as a way to remind people of the practical steps available to reclaim ownership of their personal data through adjustments within applications, operating systems and other digital tools. This year's iteration shifts focus toward a more radical approach: abandoning platforms, applications and operating systems altogether in favor of alternatives.

The organization has assembled a resource hub designed to guide users toward independent software options, emerging social media competitors, alternative operating systems and tools that limit how popular applications harvest data for artificial intelligence purposes.

To encourage participation, the EFF has created shareable digital merit badges that let users document and publicize their transitions. Completing any of the available tasks allows participants to broadcast their progress through social media posts or profile image changes. According to the EFF, "Better, more privacy-respecting, and less-enshittified tools are out there. We just have to find and use them."
